Animal Toxicity

Toxins in the Kitchen

  • Chocolate, Coffee, Caffeine

    • Contains methylxanthines

    • Can cause vomiting, diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythms, tremors, seizure, and/or death.

  • Grapes, raisins, and currents

    • The toxic substance is unknown

    • Can cause kidney failure

  • Xylitol/sugar-free gum and candy

    • Can lead to liver failure

    • Initial signs of toxicosis include vomiting, lethargy and loss of coordination.

  • Fatty table scraps

    • Can cause Pancreatitis

  • Onions, Garlic and Chives

    • These vegetables can cause gastrointestinal irritation and can damage red blood cells.

  • Macadamia Nuts

    • Can cause weakness, depression, vomiting, tremors, and hyperthermia in dogs. Can lead to hind quarter paralysis

  • Unbaked bread dough

    • Yeast dough can rise and cause gas to accumulate in your pets digestive system.

  • Alcohol

    • Can cause vomiting, diarrhea, decrease coordination, central nervous system depression, difficulty breathing, tremors, coma, and even death

  • Avocados

    • Contain Persin

    • Can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs. Birds and rodents are especially sensitive to avocado poisoning and can develop congestion, difficulty breathing, and fluid accumulation around the heart.

  • Milk

    • Pets do not possess significant amounts of lactase (the enzyme that breaks down lactose in milk) and can cause diarrhea and other digestive upset.

    • Advil, Motrin, Tylenol, etc.

  • Antidepressants

    • Zoloft, Cymbalta, Effexor, etc.

  • ADD/ADHD Medications

    • Ritalin, Vyvanse, etc.

  • Sleep Aids

    • Klonopin, Ambien, Lunesta, etc.

  • Muscle Relaxers

    • Lioresal, Flexreril, etc.

  • Heart Medications

    • Cartia, Cardizem, etc.

 

 

Poisonous House Plants

  • Amaryllis

  • Caladium/Angel Wings

  • Crocus

  • Cyclamen

  • Daffodils

  • Dumb Cane

  • English Holly

  • Hyacinth

  • Lilies (any kind)

  • Marijuana

  • Mistletoe
